Now that you have a loose organic tea, what do you do with it?

Rule #1: Don’t panic!

People have been making tea from medicinal plants for eons—long before there was even such a thing as a tea bag—and so can you. It’s simple!

The active ingredients (also known as “the helpful stuff”) in herbal plants can be extracted in a myriad of ways. When it’s extracted in alcohol, it’s called a tincture or maceration. When it’s extracted in oils, it’s an infusion. And when it’s extracted in water, it’s called a tisane or—yep—TEA! The trick is to infuse the water with the herbs and not let the herbal goodness escape.

Rule #2: Know your pot from your kettle!

A teakettle is for boiling water; a teapot is for brewing your tea. You pour boiling water from your teakettle over the tea in your teapot or cup. You can also just use a pan, if you want.

Here’s what you do:

Boil approximately one cup of water for each cup of tea you want to make in either a teakettle or a pan. Now, if you are also using a teapot, add about 1 heaping tablespoon of herbs (the tea) to the teapot. Pour the boiling water from the kettle over the tea in the teapot and put the lid on. If you’re making tea in a pan on the stove, add about 1 heaping tablespoon of herbs (the tea) to the boiling water in the pan and immediately take the pan off of the heat. Cover the pan. That’s it! Just let it rest for about 10-15 minutes. Now all you have to do is strain the herbs from the brewed tea and you’re on your way to blissful beveraging!

Most of the teas from Earth Mama Angel Baby are made with the leaves of the plants and they need only 10-15 minutes to allow the cell walls to break down enough to release their active ingredient goodies into the water. Teas made from roots and seeds should simmer a lot longer. And remember, the pot needs to be covered. Why, Mama, why? Well, to prevent the delicate essential plant oils from escaping into Never Never Land. Herbs are wonderful gifts from Mama Earth; naturally, we like to treat them with the respect they deserve.

That’s it – easy as pie. Now settle back, put your tired feet up and sip a celestial cup. Enjoy. You deserve it.
